Summary: Photographs, taken by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, Tucson Division, documenting work along the tracks. Images include washouts, railroad bridges and underpasses, tracks, bluffs, trestles, jetty protection, crossings, and erosion along rivers and washes. There are views of underpass construction in Benson, Casa Grande, Phoenix, Tucson (Stone Avenue), and Pantano; and views of flood damage and flooding of Canada del Oro, San Simon Wash, Santa Cruz River, San Pedro River (at Benson), and Tucson. Other Tucson images include railroad crossings at Cherry Ave., Wilmot Rd., Grant Rd., Jaynes Station, and the Park Avenue railroad tracks, as well as Stone Avenue and Rillito Creek. Other places included are Yuma railroad yards, the Globe branch, the Pantano trestle and bridge, and Dragoon, Ariz. Employee photographs are primarily groups at safety meetings with some construction crews at sites. There are also images of bringing the historic locomotive Engine #1673 into Tucson on March 30, 1955, and of Chandler Steam Locomotive #2562.

The Southern Pacific Railroad was founded in 1865 and was purchased in 1869 by Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Mark Hopkins, better known as the Big Four. It was the first railroad to connect Los Angeles to the rest of California and its lines extended as far as New Orleans.
